1968 Mustang Dealer Documents
The following documents were used through the selling process of a new 1968 Mustang, received by the dealer on June 12, 1968 and subsequently delivered to the buyer on July 1, 1968. The documents are typical of records kept by dealers at that time period. The documents will be described with images that can be clicked for a larger version. These documents are provided for research and are not to be copied and/or used for profit.
First is the envelope that the documents are contained. I suppose that there were boxes of these filed away in storage rooms or attics back then. To start with this, it can be seen that the serial number was 8F01C204648, which was a 289 2V standard coupe. The color is written as Highland Green. Factory invoice of 6/4/68, received date of the car, 6/12/68 and delivery to the customer, 7/1/68. Dealer profit is shown as $313.31. On the back on the envelope are some dealer calculations, which appear to do with the monthly payment amount. Finally, there is a checklist of items that have been checked off as completed.
It would reason that this envelope was filled out when the car was received from the factory by the dealer.
The oldest document in the envelope appears to be the order sheet. It looks like this car was ordered for dealer stock, so was not a special order by a customer. Based on the otherwise standard features of the car, that would make sense. The order form has the dealer name (Blackburn Ford, Oak Hill, West Virginia) with an order number of 909928. The dealer code was H525 in DSO 47. From the order sheet, we can see that a 2 door hardtop, in Highland Green was ordered. They wrote in Ivy Gold-Vinyl Bench at the top. 289 2V and 3 speed transmission are checked off. 7.35x14 4 ply tires with white side wall, Rayon. An AM radio and wheel covers are the only other items checked off.
The next document in the series most likely was the Dealer Invoice from Ford. The options pretty much match up with the order sheet except that it was not received with a bench seat. On the bottom right, TRIM 2G is shown, which is buckets in Ivy Gold. The suggested retail price was $2898.52 with a Dealer cost of $2387.42. Date on the invoice is 6/4/68. There were 2 copies of the invoice, one with '2' and the other with '5'. The '5' copy does not have as much detail.
On 6/12/68, a pre-delivery schedule is completed, which is the date noted as received by the dealer. A 1968 Mercury sheet was used for this, which is somewhat amusing. "1806 Mustang" is written at the top, whish is the "Deal No." entry on the envelope. This must have been an internal inventory number for the dealer. Looks like everything checked out ok in the inspection, items that did not apply were marked with an 'X' instead of a check.
The next set of documents are the beginning and end of the sales transaction to the original owner of this '68 coupe. It appears that on or around 6/29/68, a 24 yr old Army man bought the car. June 29, 1968 was a Saturday, so they must have been out car shopping. He traded in a '65 Mercury that he still owed money on and then financed the rest of the purchase. A "Car Order" document, dated 6/29/68 is included. There is also a loan document and "Statement of Retail Automobile Transaction", which all 3 have similar information.
On 7/2/68, an invoice was printed, finalizing the deal to purchase the car.
The final document is from 7/9/68, sent to the buyer, informing him that his West Virginia title was included and ready to submit to DMV.
